Estonia July 98
Just about sums up The Baltics as with the strength of the beer you go down hill Great value however. Massive birds nest atop any pole. Grand old horse & cart on a country road.
We laughed when we visited the country stores but soon learnt they are a lot better now than the communist days.(Pood means Food) Many old derelict buildings, factories and this pub. Off to Riia (Riga) having cycled Estonia.
Latvia
A classic run down motor camp by the sea, on the way to Riga (still) A great old city and our boring commo Hotel.
A surprisingly huge well made bridge, a perfect day and guess what we're looking at, They are everywhere!
Riga's old town is simply divine, no she is not rushing to give the flowers to the broken down Red Army soldier. Poor old Baltics the Russians raped & pillaged the countries then upon leaving took everything that moved leaving the countries in decay. Many streets like this had pot holes like swimming pools.
Lithuania

Arriving in Siauliai in Lithuania, a real dump but not a bad promenade and graffiti, catching up with easy rider & hay

Thousands of inefficient kiosks all over the Baltics with people sitting inside just waiting, this one selling lousy cassettes (mostly pirated). Mum & Dad in the horse & cart. Always lots of kids hanging around when we camp in town parks. Met lovely family when the boy was out walking and invited us back for lunch.
Unique to here, these intricate arrangements. Entering Kaunas, next to Vilnius, it was once the capital. The most horrible five mile wide assortment of rundown Soviet era apartment buildings greeted us and behind them old wooden houses that have never been painted, the usual potholes and dangerous roads but a great old town area where we stayed at quite an average hotel and strolled the Liberty Boulevard but using this phone to update the site was difficult, (joke-really an existing Soviet telephone box one) oh! and attempt to get well again...we will.
