Jordan - Nov 98
After an unneccesary delay at the Syrian/Jordan border and getting ripped off by the exchange office there, it wasn't long before we hit the dead sea, Many of us were dying to go for a swim there. Very salty 35% in fact, so this required camping close to fresh water, Mick knew the place. So here's Rob not trying to sink and couldn't anyway.
John couldn't sink either, just as well cause he can't swim. The three stooges from Alison on the left via Jack on to Big Glen on the right, enjoying the warm water pouring over the waterfall, everyone loved it even Tina, Cathy and John who look as though they've been carved into the rock. The view from the waterfall overlooking the Dead Sea towards Israel and Jerusalem.
Jordan has its fair share of treasures and we weren't to miss any of them so climbing up the mountain roads we go to this impressive site. A bit of planning and talking, then off again.
Just before sunset - Heather attempts to shave her legs using a blunt razor, then another glorious sunset the night before heading into Petra, one of the worlds greatest sites. Should be too with a price of $35 entry fee. Lara gets a good start by falling off the horse thanks to the dozy ranchers then into the canyon that has an ancient road about a kilometer long.
Horse & carts use this path that leads to this awesome site of the ancient treasury (not really a treasury) Tombs really. And there were no shortage of tombs. Dozens of them covering the limestone cliffs surrounding the old city of Petra, now a crumbling load of stones between the cliff lined tombs. Ay you, hello, what your name....where you from.............
"You want camel?" No! is the stock answer. Looks impressive as they stroll down "Main Street" Petra with the tombs in the background. Ok, two days of Petra and that's quite enough say most people, now it's off to Wadi Rum, recently of Lawrence of Arabia fame and some parts of the movie were shot here as well. Camping in the desert again, as rugged as hell was the scenery. Next day into Rum itself where they charge you to enter the town. Only the Jordanians would do that!
Rob's getting quite attached to the old camels by this stage, enough! we must go now as we're off to Egypt tonight so at the border in Aqaba at the north east tip of the Gulf of Aqaba, Mick grabs all the passports and onto the "will it run late again" ferry to Sinai. By the way, yes it did. How unusual for things to not run on time in the middle east. Great trip though! Everyone chatting on top deck. Camp Mother (Lisa) on the right.
